Why Are Standard Formulations More Cost-Effective Than Customized Formulations?

Proven Formulations. Smarter Manufacturing Costs.

Another important factor that affects pricing is whether you choose a standard Herbal Hills formulation or develop a completely customized formulation.

Many customers assume that changing a formulation only changes the ingredient cost.

In reality, a customized formulation creates additional costs at almost every stage of manufacturing.

Standard vs. Customized — The Cost Difference at a Glance

LOWER COST

Standard Formulation

  • Manufactured in large commercial batches
  • Bulk procurement pricing
  • Shared testing & setup costs
  • Established, proven process

HIGHER COST

Customized Formulation

  • Dedicated production batch
  • Individual ingredient sourcing
  • Separate testing & documentation
  • Separate packaging setup

Standard Herbal Hills Formulations

Our standard formulations are manufactured regularly in large commercial batches. For many products, production runs may reach hundreds of thousands of tablets or capsules, allowing us to achieve significant economies of scale.

These larger production batches provide advantages such as:

Bulk procurement of raw materials
Better purchasing prices from suppliers
Larger manufacturing batches
Lower production losses
Lower testing cost per unit
Better machine utilisation
Lower packaging cost
Lower overall manufacturing cost per bottle

These manufacturing efficiencies allow us to offer very competitive pricing while maintaining consistent quality.

Customized Formulations

A customized formulation follows a completely different manufacturing process. Since the formulation is unique to one customer, every stage must be managed separately.

📦

Raw Material Procurement

Each ingredient must be sourced specifically for that formulation. Suppliers often have minimum pack sizes.

  • Even if only 3 kg of an herb is needed, suppliers may sell only 5 kg+ packs
  • This increases procurement cost

🧪

Separate Quality Testing

Every customized batch requires its own quality control process.

  • Raw materials and finished products tested individually
  • Smaller volume means higher testing cost per bottle

🏭

Separate Manufacturing Batch

Customized formulations usually require dedicated production batches.

  • Separate machine setup
  • Separate documentation
  • Separate line clearance
  • Separate equipment cleaning
  • Separate production planning

🏷️

Separate Packaging

Customized products also require their own dedicated packaging run.

  • Individual label printing
  • Separate cartons
  • Dedicated packaging setup
  • Separate batch documentation

Example: Even if a formulation needs only 3 kg of a particular herb, the supplier may only sell it in 5 kg (or larger) packs — and this same “smaller volume, same fixed cost” pattern repeats across testing, manufacturing and packaging. This is why customized formulations generally cost more per unit than standard ones.

Again, these costs are spread across a much smaller production quantity — which is exactly why customization comes at a premium.

Which Option Is Right for You?
